2003 Goats do Roam Red
As of late, I’ve been getting annoyed with the value that seems to be placed on a catchy name, especially with cheap wine, but I’m glad I tried this spicy blend of Shiraz and Pinotage. Okay, so how did it get the name? Let me share with you the fun story on the bottle:
“One afternoon, at harvest time, my mischievous son Jason and his friend Justin let the goats out of their tower and sent them for a walkabout amongst the vines. As in the legend of the Yemeni goat herder, whose roaming flock first discovered the joys of coffee beans, our goats picked out the best and tastiest fruit. Their choice serves as our inspiration for this wine. To life!”

I would describe this as a dark red wine with a rich, fruity aroma, and an acidity that seems to tie everything together nicely. I will be purchasing this wine many more times. According to the Goats do Roam website, this wine should be the perfect age for drinking today. Good thing I drank the whole bottle yesterday. This wine makes me want to visit South Africa even more now. Two thumbs up.

This is great wine for an amazing price. I love it too and drink it often. Goes great with anything grilled (even burgers).
Also as a drinker goats do roam wine, I enjoy all of the fairview wines. I have visited the winery in paarl. This is a fabulous winery. I’m still sporting my T shirt around Massachusetts while telling others of the experience.
Something about this wine did not agree with me. I felt slightly ill after a small glass, and the next day further glasses triggered a slight gag reflex. Something hidden in the dry finish seemed to be the culprit. Tannin? I dunno. It was odd. Maybe I got a bad bottle, but I’m reluctant to try again.
I thought it was a fine wine for sub $10. The aroma coming out of the bottle had me holding onto my bootstraps, because it reminded of some really cheap, gas station wines that I sampled in college. In the end, it was spicy and dry, which is as-advertised and definitely my preference in vino.
Try the cab from Excelsior if you want a nice South African wine. Trader Joe’s has it for $6.99 and it is VERY good at that price point, albeit not as complex as the much more expensive American cab offerings.
A great, inexpensive wine . . . I hightly recommend it. Where can I find more in Minneapolis?
