Blue Fish Riesling 2004

First of all, take a look at this awesome wine bottle. Eye-catching azure blue with a cool, modern yellow label. If you look closely at the fish on the bottle, it spells out “blue”. Screw cap, too!

This wine hails from the Pfalz region of Germany. Now, they say Germany produces some of the best Rieslings, probably because they have been cultivating the grape since the 1400s. I’m not sure if this was the best I’ve ever had, but it was definitely worth my $8.50. This cheap wine was dry enough for me to eat it with my chicken and potato dinner, so I popped the top on tried it out tonight, after letting it chill in the freezer for a few minutes.

Tasting notes:
First thing I notice: Apricot. Now, I don’t really like apricot, but the bouquet of apricot and peach was a nice touch, and not overpowering. It also had the distinct apple-like smell and taste of a Riesling. Fine work, Blue Fish.

I would certainly get this cheap wine again.

Rating: 7.5/10
Price: $8.50
Enjoyed with: Chicken, potato, veggies

Tried this on your recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. To me, this wine had big acid, to the point of spritz, and was tart. But, after lots of overly-sweet cheap reislings, tart has a place. I’ll buy more, maybe when I’m in the mood for a dry gewurtz, but don’t want to pay the big $$.

Some find sweet German Riesling too sweet and some find dry German Riesling too tart. Doing a good Riesling is like walking a tight-rope of neither being too sweet nor too tart which we call “perfect balance”.

I tried a bottle of 2006 Blue Fish Riesling and found it less than appealing with a powerfully musty odor. I drank half a glass then dumped the rest of the bottle down the drain. Don’t waste your money.

2005 Clean slate (not 2006) is a much better Riesling. 2006 Mirassou Monterey County Riesling is excellent.

These are my choices, but your mileage may vary.

I had a great German riesling at Epcot, so I decided to take a leap and picked this one off the shelf. Blech. It had quite a bite to it. Very sharp. So sharp that I questioned my DH has to whether it had turned. I got no fruit tones at all out of it and would have dumped the bottle if I didn’t really need a drink, LOL!
