Mateus Rose

Mateus Rose

Due to the unusually hot October weather (almost 90 degrees here today!), I wanted an unusual wine that I could have chilled.

After spending only several minutes in the air-conditioned wine store this afternoon, I found exactly that. This rosé from Portugal caught my eye first with its flask-shaped bottle, and then with the cheap price tag: 4 bucks! The bottle wasn’t pretty, but just as we shouldn’t be judging wine by the price, we also don’t need to be judging a book by the cover, or in this case, a wine by the bottle. We’re all equal-opportunity alcohol consumers, right?

Overall, this wine is fantastic. Check out the fizzy bubbles:

Fizzy, Crisp and cheap: Mateus Rose

Served very cold (recommended), this wine had a delightful pink tone, a clean, crisp taste, and a very pleasant bubbly texture. This cheap, sweet, refreshing wine really hit the spot tonight.

Although I will be keeping a bottle or two of this wine to enjoy all year round, it almost makes me sad to see summer go.

Rating: 9 – Highly recommended
Price: $4.00

I agree with your rating. I had this wine a few months ago and it was great for the money. And I don’t know why you think the bottle is ugly. I thought it was a nice change.

We do agree with both reviews. Instead of picking the Vampire Wine, which Jessica felt would be more appropriate for October, We went with a wine that had a more Rosey and pleasant tone.

Hmm… The places I get it at are all local to my area, Lansing. You might want to try party stores that advertise a large wine selection.

Ooh, more Mateus fans! Good God, I’ve looked everywhere for it…It’s cheap even in Europe, but why can’t I find it in San Diego? The wine buyer at World Market told me that it was really popular in the late 70s-mid 80s, but he hasn’t seen it since then….

Wow Mateus wine sure brings back memories, the wine of choice for twenty somethings in the 70’s San Diego . I’m going to get me a case !

In L.A. you can also find it at Food For Less. I sent several bottles of it to my inlaws in Chicago who swear by it. Not, sure if I’m into the bubbles, but for $4 now that I’m on a rose’ kick, I will definetely try a bottle.

I just spent the weekend in Lisbon, and fell in love with Mateus. Bought 7 bottles before I left, not counting the ones I drank on the beach. I was looking for Lancers, herd it was popular in Lisbon, but nobody had it. Everybody had Mateus, so now I’m a fan. Price range in Portugal was 4.50-7.50 (at the bar) Euro.

Mateus is my all-time favourite summer wine. I found it cheaper to purchase in Canada than in Portugal. I love it for its light refreshing taste — and the bubbles are marvellous! Much cheaper than champagne!

Much better than Lonesome Charlie. Anyone remember that?

Mateus Wine is delicious, but here, my friends and family have a different use for it! The wine bottles are used in Hungarian Folk Dancing, and the girls balance the bottles on their heads and dance with them, but of course, we must drink the wine first!

Found in every Liquor Commission in Winnipeg.

If anybody has old mateus bottles (60’s etc..) just empty and lying around, I’d love to know about them!

Hi, I was very reluctant to buy this wine, but… not having too much money on me, I bought it. Sorry, I am writing from Canada. It is a little delightful wine, not really expensive and if anybody in Calgary area is interested, you might find it at Highlander Wine and Spirit store.

Used to drink it in Hong Kong in the ’60s, and loved it. In Macao in those days it was 30c a bottle. When we went there we drank in place of water. Although I have branched out into a wide range of wines, I still go for Mateus from time to time.

LOL!!! First the Mateus, and now someone has mentioned LANCERS….if I had a dollar for every hippies’ house who’s kitchen window was lined with candle-stuffed Mateus and Lancer bottles I saw as a wayward and wanton paperboy in the late 60’s-early 70’s, I wouldn’t be worrying now about where to get it!!
My Dad, the “Professor”,(University of Arizona’s German Dept.’s equivilant of Bare-Butt Donald Sutherland in ANIMAL HOUSE) used to keep the stuff all over his divorced man’s Bachelor Pad to lure and liquor up the young college nubiles…GOOD STUFF.

Agree with Carol and Brion above. I went to Enormous State U. in the mid-70s; Mateus was “date wine”. Got a bottle recently just to see if it stood the test of time. And it tasted just as good as it did 30 years ago.

It’s available in Flagstaff and Phoenix, but beware, the shipping is more than the wine – works out to about 8 bucks a bottle. But so what?

It does my heart good to see so many people rediscovering Mateus and Lancers. Yes, this stuff was top shelf wine in the 70’s and was even served in some of the finer resturants. Sadly, these days it is virtually forgotten and has found it’s way to the bottom shelf next to the Boone’s Farm which, by the way, was another 70’s staple. Anyway, it’s still my all-around favorite wine. It’s impossible to get this wine too cold and it just doesn’t get any better than this during the long hot summer months. If you have never tried it do yourself a favor and buy a bottle. I promise you will be hooked for life.

Mateus was the “official Vietnam helicopter pilot drink of choice” when I was there in ’68-’69. We went through it like it was soda pop (many of us weren’t yet 21 years old!). I make my own wine now, but I often think fondly of the Mateus and wonder where to find it.

Wow, Mateus and Lancers.. I remember many a bottle back from the mid/late 70’s, too. I always preferred Mateus as Lancers had some kind of unpleasant fizz to it. Now the question: how do you pronounce “Mateus?” Wasn’t there a tv commercial about that? We always says “Ma-toose.”

  35. linuxdave Avatar

I fell in love with Mateus in Rota, Spain…so much so that I brought a few bottles back with me! It costs me $12euros a bottle in the restaurants in Spain….I can’t believe it is so cheap here in the states. I truly love this wine! And the bottle is so chic! Anyone know where I can find it San Diego?

I just got back from Spain where they served Mateus Rose in one of the best-rated restaurants in Madrid. It seemed to be very popular there, and believe me, the Spaniards know and appreciate a good, dry rose. When I got back to the States, I asked a local wine dept. at a good grocery store, and they were happy to order me as much as I cared to buy.

I just enjoyed a bottle of Mateus this afternoon with a neighbor. I’d just suggest that you ask at a local wine shop… it’s availiable!

I have 3 empty Mateus boxes & almost a dozen empty Mateus bags w/ handles. I think they’re from the early ’80s. If anybody is interested in collecting these items for nostalgia, please say so before I sell them on eBay. My husband bought hundreds of these bottles to drink for the last 20 or so years & they used to come in either boxes or bags. He still drinks it once in a while. Here in San Fernando Valley, CA, they (white & rose) can still be found at Jons. I also have a set of salt & pepper shakers.

In 1976 I was in the Navy and stationed in Rota, Spain, where my wife and I spent our first Thanksgiving away from home. We had friends over for our first Thanksgiving dinner and wanted to be classy by having some wine. The Navy didn’t pay much back then and we knew nothing about wine so we bought a small bottle of Mateus Rose to share with our friends. We loved it then and we love it now. 31 years later, Mateus is still a tradition at our holiday dinners and it still brings back very fond memories.
